Redlawsk
David Redlawsk
is an Associate Professor of Political Science. While many of his courses
have students engaged in the local political environment, his "Local
Politics" class has taken this to a new level. Students learn the
basics about local government from in-class lectures and then apply what
they’ve learned through engagement in local city council campaigns
and other organizations involved in local politics. Students work directly
with the campaigns and organizations, getting an opportunity to see firsthand
how the “real” political world compares with the textbook
view. The course is capped by a complex local government simulation, where
students become city officials and address important local issues.
Professor
Redlawsk is now developing a new service-learning course which will simultaneously
teach students the theory and practice of survey research while providing
data collection and analysis opportunities for local community agencies.
As a result of his work on local elections and politics, Professor Redlawsk
has presented expert information to a number of groups, including the
Cedar Rapids Charter Study Commission in 2005, where he was invited to
help the Commission learn the opportunities and risks of different forms
of local government. As a result of this work, the Cedar Rapids Gazette invited Professor
Redlawsk to be part of a panel on local government change. He has also made presentations and served on panels
for the League of Women Voters and various local service clubs. At the
state level, Professor Redlawsk was appointed by Governor Vilsack to the IowAccess
Advisory Council, which is charged with enhancing citizen access to local
and state government through effective use of the Internet and other electronic
systems.
Professor Redlawsk also serves in other community capacities. He
is Vice President of Iowa City Babe Ruth Baseball—a baseball league for teens, and Vice Chair of the Johnson County
Democratic Party. He serves on the Board of Directors for City Circle
Acting Company of Coralville and the Old Capital Sertoma Service Club.
He just completed a term as Chair of Fair!, a local political advocacy
organization.
