David
Schoonover
For almost twenty years, David Schoonover, curator of rare books
at the University of Iowa Libraries, has been giving presentations to
university classes, civic and church groups, culinary history groups,
and professional library and scholarly organizations. These programs introduce
potential students, donors of library materials, and researchers to the
UI Library collections.
Presentation titles include: “Books as Art,” “Much More than Recipes,” “Feasts for All Seasons,” “Rare Books Through the Centuries,” “Seven Centuries
of Culinary Feasts,” and “A Flock of Religious Books.”
As part of these presentations, Mr. Schoonover brings examples
of manuscripts and rare books such as a Medieval Book of Hours, an Anglo-Saxon
land charter with its seal still attached, a fold-out dinner chart for
the dishes served at the Coronation of King George 2nd, and artists’
books by Jack London, Gertrude Stein, and James Joyce.
