Howard
Cowen
Howard Cowen has worked diligently to make dental care accessible to all in the Iowa City area. He served as director of the Geriatric and Special Needs Program in the UI College of Dentistry for 23 years. This innovative program provides dental services to geriatric and special needs populations who would not otherwise have access to oral health care, and also offers training to dental students in providing this special care.
Professor Cowen helped establish the Dick Parrot Free Dental Clinic in Iowa City where he volunteered his dental services for many years. In 1991, he received a grant from the Gannett Foundation to provide dental services to the homeless, and has continued this work through the support of United Way.
Professor Cowen has also served as a board member of the Free Medical Clinic and the Free Dental Clinic. Additionally, he is a member of The United Way and The University of Iowa Foundation.
