Lynn McMorris
In 1990, following the death of her parents and seeing first hand how Hospice can make a difference, Lynn McMorris, program associate in the College of Education, completed training to become a volunteer for Iowa City Hospice. Her initial involvement was with direct patient care which included everything from helping terminally ill patients with housekeeping, fixing meals, bathing, getting out of the house for a movie or shopping or just some good conversation and companionship.
While maintaining her direct patient care, McMorris has, over the years, become active in a variety of other hospice functions such as the following:
- Assistance with and participation in the annual “Walk for Dignity” an annual Hospice fundraiser
- Mentoring new volunteers
- Participation in panels for new volunteer workshop,
- Participation in Hospice in-service class for Mercy Hospital
- 11th hour care (final days)
Whenever the occasion seems appropriate, Lynn volunteers with her husband Mel, who became a Hospice volunteer in 2001.
"The motto of Hospice is ‘adding life to days’. The rewards, for me, far surpass the effort, so I feel this motto speaks as much to volunteers as it does to patients.” —Lynn McMorris
