President Skorton has declared the 2005-2006 academic year the "Year of Public Engagement." Throughout the year, we will spotlight individuals and groups within the University community who embody the spirit of public engagement at the local, state, national, and/or international levels.

The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy held information sessions
on the Medicare prescription drug coverage program— also known
as Medicare Part D—for seniors Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 at the Iowa
City Public Library in downtown Iowa City.
Faculty and students with the UI College of Pharmacy showed the twenty-seven
people who came to the free class how to use the prescription drug plan
finder on Medicare's web site to locate the best plan for them.
According to Michael Kelly, associate dean for academic affairs in the
College of Pharmacy and leader of the class, the best way to understand
the complex options is to use a finder program on the web site. This sorts
through the 42 plans available in the area to find the best plans for
the drugs a patient takes and their pharmacy preferences.
Tracy Anderson, 67, of Kalona attended the hands-on class Wednesday night
and said that without the class to teach him how to use the web site,
he never would have known about an alternative plan that appears to cost
about half as much as his existing plan.
Michelle Wannemuehler, a second-year pharmacy student, helped Anderson
through the process. She said she volunteered to educate herself on the
system as much as to help others select from among the options. "It's
just a matter of finding the specific plan that's good for each person," she said.
