Rex Honey
Rex Honey, professor of geography and international studies, has implemented service learning into his Geography of Justice course. The course, designed for upper level undergraduates, provides an opportunity for each student to work with a community organization.
One group of students is working with the North Liberty Food Pantry on a needs assessment as well as helping with food distribution. Judy McRoberts, pantry director, has taught the group how to carry out the assessment and supervised their work.
Another group is working with Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence (IPGV), an organization that emerged after the shootings on the University of Iowa campus on November 1, 1991. Several of the students are working with John Johnson, IPGV director, to convince newspapers to stop taking classified advertisements for the sale of firearms. The practice, known as “the newspaper loophole,” allows people banned from possessing guns to procure them. Thanks to the student work, several newspapers have stopped taking such ads.
Most of the other students are working with the Johnson County Food Alliance on a series of activities to improve the quality of food available to people, particularly lower income people, in Johnson County. A few students are working on individualized projects with organizations, their jobs ranging from fund raising to service provision. Students have expressed appreciation for the opportunity to take the theory of the classroom into the community so that indeed they provide service while learning.
